The button I chose as inspiration was one that looked like a Maori Koru. I was planning to ask Dad to carve the swirling shape on his bandsaw. He cut the disc and for a brief moment I had the urge to grab my phone to photograph it for Instagram. Instead I took pause and relished the moment to watch Dad’s experienced hands guide the wood through the saw. The disc of huon pine was so perfect I decided not to do the koru in the middle. I have sanded the disc to reveal the grain and left the rough edge. I will be forever reminded of the moment in time with Dad.
