My father was wrapped in a shroud when he passed and it had a profound effect on me. I have created an image of layered paint with parts of letters and marks which represent memories surrounding a cocoon like symbol. The cocoon sits in the middle of a napkin above flames and symbolise his transformation into a butterfly shape. It is a representation of my feelings of loss and how in my mind I have triumphed over this loss by associating it with transformation. The shroud is a temporary wrap that breaks down to reveal a butterfly rather than being an undignified rag used to help remove its contents out of sight and mind.

My interest is in developing expressive theatre sets on canvas. Artworks I develop often include cloudy landscapes in the background which are to help anchor my obscure narratives to the real world. For me the landscape and sky also represent an emotional state which is why I wonder what the weather will be like each day. I look at the clouds hoping to see rays of sunlight and my mood changes. I then arrange props and sometimes characters drawn from distorted snapshots in my imagination into scenes that provide me with some sense of meaning and peace. I do fight against existentialist thought and the absurdity of being.
