I have embroidered some vintage handkerchiefs with the words ‘mourn, lament, jubilation and celebrate’. These are all synonyms from words in the title of the exhibition; “Loss and Triumph”. As humans we all experience triumphs and losses in our lives; from marriages, exam results, sports wins and the birth of our children to the deaths of our loved ones, relationship breakups, homelessness, poverty and loneliness.

My work is strongly informed by my childhood memories & experiences. I primarily use print & embroidery on a variety of vintage textiles. Words as well as images feature strongly.
My father served many prison sentences and in my work, I express how his confinement has affected my mental health and also notions of lost childhood. In addition I focus on my beloved grandmother’s battle with Alzheimer’s. She was a very strong woman who suffered much adversity in her life. She has always been a constant inspiration to me in many different ways and I owe a lot of my values to her. Within my work I explore ideas of fading memories and the loss of the essence of a person to the devastating illness.
