Artist statement

In 2021 I won the Waverley/Woollahra 9x5 Landscape Prize for my work 'The Forest at Dusk', selected from over 600 entries.

Judges’ comments: 'The painting has a beautiful translucency and is inventive in its composition. A wonderful design and control of colour, giving great creation of depth on a small scale. Delivered with bold and deliberate translucent brush strokes, it has an immediacy which is difficult to achieve on a small scale.'

I grew up near a National Park and have a love of the natural world. As a volunteer bush regenerator I am passionate about Australian native plants. I’ve been creating inks from my garden, experimenting these past few years, for reasons of ecological sustainability, and for their unique beauty. My works now are a celebration of nature, a way to draw attention to the great diversity that is the Australian bush, and an effort to avoid contributing to the pollution of the planet.

More recently, I've been combining these works with pastels, integrating the human into natural materials. These are more like collaborations with nature, of which of course we are part. Sensitive and thoughtful integration is key to the future of humanity.

I am a member of Nexus Gallery, Bellingen and regularly show work there.

I also create assemblages, under the broad name 'Co-existence' ,where I am combining found objects, such as a Pelican salt shaker found in a market in Uruguay with natural materials sourced from nature. We will need to find a way to work together to heal the planet.
