Artist statement

I paint mainly in oils and acrylics on canvas, wood panels and aluminium. A Japanese residency in Kyoto gave rise to an interest in working with traditional Japanese inks and papers. Painting on salvaged fly-wire pieces, sewn together like patchwork, is another area of interest. The appeal with these works is the layered, transparent and ghost-like effects achieved, on a discarded and often rusted and damaged item.

My recent work has been engaged with ideas of mortality, a consideration of stereotypical imagery, and a passionate interest in the sublime natural world and our relationship with it. My images rummage through the forest of our dreams and fears: about aging, the destruction of the natural world, and the effect these current global crises have on our imaginings.
