Artist statement

Anthony Carey is a painter based in Dublin, Ireland. He is currently studying for a BA in Creative Arts with University of Creative Arts, in the UK. Previously he spent over twenty years as a graphic design tutor. 

“On more than one occasion in my life, I have gone to bed as one person, and by the end of the following day, I knew I would never meet that person again. The series I am currently working on begins as gestural and expressive in nature but ends up containing thousands of individually controlled marks from the gentlest of brush strokes to the most forceful of strikes with steel and copper rods.

There is something quite magical in building, cutting away and rebuilding layers of paint. Memories are evoked through an emotional connection with colour, texture, and mark-making. This process takes me on a journey through people, places, and things through time. Feelings become amplified and colours exaggerated as memories collide and merge, leading to unintended connections.

I work mainly with acrylic paint, industrial adhesives, as well as with ground marble dust, sand and plaster. Paint is also left to dry on the palette rather than dumped, and I use this in creating texture, so each new work contains elements from the last, forming a line of connection in my work."

Working intuitively, Carey has developed a passionate relationship with colour and texture, allowing him to respond to emotional connections. Drawing on life experiences, his current work explores how recalled memory pushes into and through abstract expressionism, like waves breaking the surface of the water, and is as much about absence as they are about the playful occupation of space.
