Title : Heart, Home

Medium: Oil Painting

Dimensions : 27 x 45cm

About the artwork:

“Heart, Home”, the piece I created for ‘Elsewhere & Other Places’, is inspired by the quote “When you really just want to be somewhere else …”; which automatically made me paint my feelings of nostalgia for living far from my homeland, far away from my family and my roots. When I think about where I would like to be I always visualize the oak forests around my childhood home. I think about the paths I often crossed with my family and friends. I think about the magical aura surrounding each tree, each flower. So I painted my wish to be there as a white sad lady hugging the memory of my roots in her arms. She cries longing for them, decorated with florals representing hope and courage to face what’s to come. In her hands, a lily of the valley symbolizes the return of happiness, rooting outside the memory so it will become true.

About Iratxe:

I paint mostly with watercolors and oils on wood. I am always trying to create my pieces with the least toxic media possible in order to work clean and sustainably.

Inspired by the magical woods I was raised in and the darkness of my own inner world, I explore the union between utopian scenarios with the emotional strength of mental diseases. The unknown, the human subconscious, the fragility of the mind and our undeniable connection to nature are the constant path in my work. When creating new works, I draw inward for autobiographical themes linked with the beauty of animals and botanical elements; using the symbology of certain objects, animals and flowers to subtly show my inner feeling.
