(153) Laura Phillips - Metamorphosis

About this Artwork

The prompt for this painting was a page entitled ”The water folk: The Story of a Flatfish” from Newnes’ Pictorial Knowledge Encyclopedia. I used the theme of metamorphosis from the story of the flatfish to create my work, which depicts the metamorphosis of four different species – a butterfly, a frog, a jellyfish, and of course our hero of the story – the flatfish. Towards the bottom of the image you can see the initial stages for each species, whether it be eggs or tiny polyps as in the case of the jellyfish. As we move up towards the top of the painting we move through the various stages that each animal goes through to reach their adult form, for example, eggs -> tadpole -> tadpole transforming -> adult frog. These animals are intertwined between a flowering plant which also exhibits various stages of flowering (from bud to open flower) as you move from the bottom to the top of the painting.

About Laura

I have always had a love for both art and science and I currently work as a biologist and Antarctic Scientist during the day, spending the night times drawing and painting. Combining these two passions I hope to bring the wonder and beauty, as well as the chaos of the natural world to life on paper and canvas. I am particularly interested in capturing the mood of an environment through the use of colour and value.

Having done field work in the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic, I have quite an interest in the wild landscapes and seascapes found down south, and the amazing animals that inhabit these regions.

Another major focus of my work is the ocean. I currently reside in Melbourne, Australia, but grew up down on the surf coast (Jan Juc).

I work primarily in oils but also love creating graphite and charcoal illustrations, and occasionally dabble in watercolour.
