(167) Liliana Stafford - Stone Key

200

About this artwork

The page ‘A Stone Key’ spoke to me of magic, alchemy, language and hidden knowledge.
Stones have been around from the beginning and contain knowledge that unlocks our understanding of the natural world.
Language is mankind’s key to unlocking this knowledge.
In this piece I wanted language and the natural world to collide. The paper is printed using rust from an old jetty washed by the sea, a process using alchemy.
If we could read the language of stones we would know more how to live in and with the natural world .The first language was marks on a stone. Stones hold knowledge going back to the beginning of time. I wanted something old so I chose rust from a jetty to make my print, then I created language-marks on paper echoing those original marks on stone. But are they words or images? They are universal marks in a language we can give our own meaning to.

About Liliana

Liliana Stafford works in acrylic, ink, graphite, pencil, charcoal and watercolour on gallery stretched box canvases which are mostly unframed. Stafford also works on paper, and raw linen. Her sculptures are made with paper, wire, grasses and natural found objects. Her drawings are non-objective and expressive. Liliana’s style is a blend of abstract minimalism and expressionism. ’Seeing means closing your eyes’ – Wols (Alfred Otto Wolfgang Shultze.)
Through her drawings, paintings and sculptures, Liliana filters the experiences of her life and gives them form. Liliana Stafford’s work is inspired by seen and unseen worlds colliding, referencing simultaneously the natural world and layered human relations. She is fascinated by the unseen manifested physical: an invisible wind moving a visible leaf.
In Liliana’s own words, ‘Nature cannot speak for itself, so others must find a way to speak for it.’ Through her work Liliana strives to challenge our perceptions of the natural world and how we interact as humans within it, with it and with each other.
Her 3D works are created through knitting, knotting and weaving natural materials: wire, stone, paper and twine. These natural materials are used to represent invisible energies while the stones, leaves and found materials are reference points for that energy. These works depict a collision of that energy, memory and significant interaction (human and/or animal). The wire work is like drawing in the air, making manifest what can only be felt.
